Wisdom Teeth and Surgical Dental Extractions

Wisdom teeth removal is one of the most common surgical procedures carried out in the United Kingdom. Asymptomatic wisdom teeth do not need removal but should there be involvement of the tooth with gum disease, tooth decay, abscess formation or association of these teeth with cysts and benign growths then surgical removal is indicated. Most commonly an OPT radiograph is all that is necessary prior to carrying out the procedure to identify the tooth and its relationship to the underlying nerve. Sometimes a Cone Beam CT Scan may be indicated to identify the position of the tooth and its relationship to the nerve, to identify if there is a chance of nerve damage during removal. A coronectomy may be advised in certain situations.

Most dental surgeons will be able to carry out routine dental extractions, but occasionally may need to refer patients for dental extractions beyond their level of competency.
Most often the procedure is carried out under a local anaesthetic but occasionally may warrant a general anaesthetic.
I have been performing dental extractions and wisdom teeth removal for over two decades and have a low complication rate. In 2018 I treated 576 patients for impacted wisdom teeth and dental extractions beyond the competency of the dentist.
