Head and Neck Malignancy

Head and neck cancers account for approximately 3% of the cancers diagnosed in the United Kingdom. The cancer usually develops from the lining of the oral cavity and it may be on the surface of the tongue, inside the cheeks, roof of the mouth or on the palate. In rare instances it maybe in the minor salivary glands or over the tonsillar bed. Rarely they can originate from within the bone of the maxilla or mandible. The most common symptom of oral cancer is that of an ulcer within the mouth which does not heal. There may also be unexplained persistent lumps within the mouth or in the neck. There maybe unexplained loosening of the teeth or some numbness associated with the lower lip or the tongue. Very commonly these cancers may develop in pre-existing white and red patches in the oral cavity.

Although surgery is the main treatment for oral cancer, radiotherapy and chemotherapy may also play important roles in their management. All oral cancers in the United Kingdom are treated through a Head and Neck MDT in accordance with published guidelines. Management of Oral cancer including Microvascular reconstruction forms a major part of my workload in the NHS.
I am a core member of the West Wales Head and Neck Multidisciplinary Team.
