Human skin is subject to a variety of common benign growths but most never need any medical attention. Management requires an appreciation of how such growths appear and behave, coupled with the ability to differentiate them from more serious entities. Most common skin growths include seborrheic keratosis, sebaceous hyperplasia, freckles, lentigines, naevus, angiomas, dermatofibromas, lipomas, epidermal inclusion cyst and pyogenic granulomas. A large proportion of these lesions may appear on the skin of the head and neck region. Should these lesions get symptomatic or aesthetically noticeable then surgery may be indicated.
Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers and is on the increase. The most common lesion is a basal cell carcinoma followed by Squamous cell carcinoma and Malignant Melanoma. Although rare a number of non-epithelial skin cancers are also well known and include Merkel cell carcinoma, Dermatofibromasarcoma Protuberans, Atypical fibroxanthoma, sebaceous and adnexal carcinoma. Majority of the skin cancers are present in the head and neck region and surgery remains the mainstay of treatment. Head and neck skin cancers are usually treated under a Local anaesthetic but may warrant a General anaesthetic if they are large and need major reconstruction. Over the past 5 years I have treated over a 1000 cases, with a low complication and recurrence rate.
