Oral medicine is the speciality of dentistry concerned with the oral health care of patients with chronic recurrent and medically related disorders of the oral and maxillofacial region and with their diagnosis and non-surgical management. Some conditions diagnosed and managed are oral mucosal cancers and pre-cancerous, recurrent aphthous stomatitis, mucocutaneous disease, lichen planus, lichenoid reaction, pemphigus, pemphigoid, lupus, erythema multiforme, Graft Versus Host Diseases, Salivary gland disease, dry mouth including Sjogren’s syndrome, systemic illness with salivary gland involvement, acute and chronic sialadenitis, gastrointestinal disease, crohn’s disease, coeliac disease, ulcerative colitis, infectious disease, candida, herpes simplex disease, HIV, HPV, tuberculosis, syphilis, orofacial granulomatosis, angio oedema and Bechet’s disease. Oral medicine also deals with the diagnosis and management of TM joint pain, Trigeminal Neuralgia, atypical facial pain, and atypical odontalgia.
Oral medicine acts as a focus for specialist care of patients with either oral facial manifestations of systemic conditions or localised orofacial problems unrelated to the teeth. My broad dental and medical background allows for a comprehensive assessment, diagnosis and management of varied and challenging cases, usually non- surgically.
