Salivary gland disease can be divided into two main groups, infective and neoplastic. Sialolithiasis is condition in which tiny salivary stones form within the gland or within the duct of the gland. Most of these are made up of calcium and very often do not cause any symptoms. Once the stone enlarges, they may obstruct the flow of saliva and lead to a secondary infection. Various treatments have been described for obstructive sialolithiasis which range from retrieval of obstructed stones to removal of the gland.
Salivary glands are also prone to develop cysts and tumours. Management of these cysts and tumours is usually surgical and carried out through a Head and Neck MDT if malignant.
